GSK says it has resumed making the H1N1 adjuvanted vaccine at its Que. plant

TORONTO - The company making Canada's H1N1 vaccine has finished producing a special version of the shot for pregnant women and is again focusing its efforts on the vaccine intended for the majority of Canadians, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.

GlaxoSmithKline was asked to make special batches of adjuvant-free vaccine for pregnant women. The switchover of production lines at its plant in Ste-Foy, Que., was blamed for slowdowns in this week's delivery of the adjuvanted vaccine across Canada.

Adjuvants are compounds that boost the immune response to the vaccine, allowing lower doses to be used.

The Quebec plant is back to producing the regular vaccine, said GSK spokeswoman Megan Spoore.

"It's now producing adjuvanted vaccine," said Spoore, who added the company is awaiting Health Canada approval before shipping the adjuvant-free shot.

"Once we receive Health Canada approval it will be shipped to the provinces and territories."

GSK said it has already shipped almost seven million doses of adjuvanted vaccine across Canada.

"In the weeks ahead there will be millions of doses coming off the production line," the company added.

Canada will be one of the first countries in the world to secure enough vaccine for its entire population, GSK said, adding it will fill Ottawa's order of 50.4 million doses before donating 50 million doses to the World Health Organization.

The manufacturer added it is very pleased to see the positive response of Canadians to the H1N1 immunization program.
